When to Book for Each Peak Period
The lead times below are about securing a vehicle, particularly a Carnival or Transporter. Those two book out well before the sedans do, because holiday travel skews toward families and groups.

Why booking early doesn’t get you a better price
It’s worth being clear about this, because most travel pricing works the other way round and people reasonably assume ours does too.
Our quote is a fixed published figure between your address and the terminal, and on the vehicle you need. Neither of those changes based on when you book. A transfer quoted eight weeks out and the same transfer quoted tomorrow morning come out at the same figure.
So there’s no early-bird discount — and equally, no late-booking penalty. If your plans firm up two days before you fly, you’re not punished for it.
What early booking gets you is the vehicle. Over Christmas week and the January school holidays, the Carnivals go first and the Transporters go earlier still. A family of five booking three days out in early January may find the only thing available is two sedans.
What does affect the figure
- The after-hours fee on pickups between 9pm and 5am — calculated and shown inside your quote before you pay, not added later. Peak periods produce a lot of these, since holiday flights cluster at unsociable hours.
- The Gateway Motorway toll on Brisbane runs — inside the quote, never a separate charge.

Holiday periods change the roads in fairly predictable ways. The useful thing isn’t the percentages — it’s knowing which specific windows to avoid when you’re choosing flights.

How we handle it
Peak-period pickups are set with a wider margin than the same run in a quiet week. The driver also chooses the route on the day — the M1 or the highway, depending on what’s moving — rather than committing in advance.
The quoted price doesn’t change with traffic. It’s set by your pickup zone, not on how long the drive takes. A run that takes 50 minutes instead of 30 costs the same as it would have on a Tuesday in February.

Families and groups over the holidays
Holiday travel is where vehicle sizing matters most, and where people most often get it wrong.
Size for the way home. A self-catering apartment produces a heavier departure than arrival — a week of groceries, beach gear and whatever came out of the shops. A family of four that flew in with three cases regularly leaves with five.
The Carnival takes seven with up to six large cases, plus a pram and up to three boards in one or two bags. The 12-seater Transporter takes 8–11 with up to ten cases. Groups larger than 11 run as multi-vehicle bookings on one reservation.
Groups leaving on different flights are the standard holiday scenario — an extended family or a wedding party heading home on three or four services across one morning. That runs on one reservation with each vehicle timed to its own flight, so nobody waits three hours at the terminal on someone else’s departure. Child seats
Queensland’s child restraint rules carry an exemption for booked hire and taxi services, so a seat isn’t mandatory in our vehicles — but we provide and fit them anyway at $35 per seat, itemised inside your quote. Rear-facing seats, forward-facing seats and boosters are all available, fitted and safety-checked before pickup, with up to 5 seats in the Carnival. Bringing your own costs nothing to fit.
New South Wales applies private-car rules to hire vehicles with no exemption, so on a Northern NSW pickup a restraint is required for children under 7 rather than optional. Full detail on the child seats page.
Which Airport Over a Holiday Period
Worth deciding before you book flights rather than after, because the transfer difference between the two airports is substantial from most Gold Coast addresses and it doesn’t show up in the airfare comparison.

Cancelled by the airline. Full credit with more than 4 hours’ notice, 50% between 1.5 and 4 hours, none inside 1.5 hours. Credits are non-refundable and apply to a future booking.

Practical Tips for Holiday Travel
Book the vehicle, not just the seat
The single most useful habit over peak periods. Count the luggage before the passengers — a sedan takes two large cases and that’s the limit, regardless of how many people fit in it.
Give us the flight number
Pickups are calculated backwards from your flight: 2 hours before a domestic departure, 3 hours before an international one, plus the drive. Over peak periods we widen that further. Working from a check-out time instead leaves you either at the terminal far too early or cutting it fine.
Allow more at the terminal, not less
Security and bag-drop queues are longer over school holidays and Christmas week than at any other time of year. The margin we build into the pickup covers the drive; the queue inside the terminal is the part that catches people out.
Book both legs together
Simpler, and both prices are confirmed upfront. The arrival leg is quoted separately from the departure because inbound legs carry an airport access fee, so you’ll see two figures rather than one doubled. The arrival gets flight monitoring, and meet and greet is included at Gold Coast Airport.
Flag anything unusual at booking
Boards, golf clubs, bike boxes, portable cots, oversized gear — all fine, all need the right vehicle. Peak periods are exactly when there’s no spare Carnival sitting around to swap into.
Early flights are easier than they look
Pre-dawn runs are clear on every route regardless of the date. A 6am departure over Christmas week is a smoother trip than a 4pm one, even though the alarm is worse.
